Menopause - still a taboo in the workplace?

It is believed that over 900,000 women have left their jobs because of menopausal symptoms, 80% of menopausal women are actively employed, approximately 75% of menopausal women experience symptoms, 63% of menopausal women say that the symptoms they experience have impacted in a negative way on their work. Alarmingly, 1 in every 3 say they do not feel comfortable talking to their manager about menopause. *

So, it would be fair to say that there is an element of taboo aligned with embarrassment and, from my own experience, a sense of loss, an identity crisis, and although I did not recognise it at the time my menopause journey had a profound effect on my mental health and overall confidence. All because of something that is entirely natural and part of the life cycle of a woman.

In 2021 there was an increase in employment tribunals involving menopause as a clear indicator that more needs to be done.

Communication and education must be at the forefront of addressing menopause in the workplace, having a ‘Menopause Champion’ who can act, advise, and support employees and employers. This can only benefit an employer, reducing number of sick days, navigating potential legal pitfalls, and improving staff retention.
