Are you suffering from Imposter Syndrome?
To be fair, from time to time, we all hear and listen to the ‘white noise’ in our head, which says - we are not worthy, we don’t know enough, why have I been promoted, I’m not clever enough, what am I doing in this room full of people so much brighter than me?
Imposter syndrome is a false belief that our achievements are the result of luck, right place, right time, rather than skill.
“The exaggerated esteem in which my lifework is held makes me very ill at ease. I feel compelled to think of myself as an involuntary swindler.” Albert Einstein
Even Mr Einstein had moments when he questioned himself.
I am often asked by my clients if Imposter Syndrome is a good thing or bad. The reality, in my opinion, unless it is so severe that it becomes crippling, is that it has its merits and, in some cases, it can become our friend. It can be used as a sense-check, or ego-check if you like. I suggest that the ‘white noise’ can be listened to, but unless it has substance it has to be dismissed - rather like flicking a switch off. Methods used to overcome that voice in our head is to remind ourselves of the journey we have made to get to this point - the achievements and successes. Think of the positive feedback you have received along the way from hierarchy, peers, teams etc. Reinforce the positives and let go of the negatives.
