Personal Brand and Perceptions
A personal brand is a recognised perception or impression of an individual based on their experience, expertise, competencies, actions and/or achievements within an industry, or the marketplace at large.
Questions I am most often asked are:
· How can I change people’s perception of me?
· How can I be seen?
· How do I get promoted?
· Why do members of my peer group appear to get more attention?
Well, the easiest way to reinvent yourself is change jobs and start afresh where you are not known other than by what is written on your CV. But that could be seen as extreme to say the least, especially if you feel as though your work has demonstrated your skill and readiness for promotion and or love the organisation. So, how can we get people to see us in a different light?
Well, firstly, it comes from understanding what people’s perception is, not what we perceive it is. Then its about putting a plan in place to change it. Listening is key, ask what individuals’ perception of you is…. Note I said listen, do not defend yourself, ask questions instead:
· What is the impact on you (or others) of my behaviour?
· What advice would you suggest I do differently?
· Help me understand why you felt that way?
A change of behaviour is usually essential - the way we act and communicate, the language we use. How we present ourselves - it is important to establish an identity and a reputation. Run your own personal improvement plan - ask for and receive feedback, express your intentions, do not be frightened of explaining why you are making decisions, especially if they are unpopular ones.
Remember, we all have a default behaviour that we revert back to in times of stress or pressure, so being aware of it and managing those moments will be more essential then ever, otherwise all the work you put into changing perceptions will be wasted. The key thing to remember is people’s perception is their reality - it can be changed if you have the will.
