How Valued Do You Feel?

Being valued in every aspect of our lives is probably as important as breathing and a definite essential in the world of work. It gives us meaning, it connects us, small gestures such as thank you, means that you have been acknowledged, that you exist, that your contribution has been recognised.

When there is a disconnect, a lack of recognition what follows is unrest. A questioning of self-confidence, lack of self-esteem and ultimately a lack of respect. What follows is a drop in output and usually an exit.

This is a critical mistake made by numerous organisations, costing time, money and sometimes can destroy people. I know that sounds overblown, but unfortunately it is a fact. We need to understand the folly of under valuing staff and teams - especially as we are facing a mental health crisis.

There appears to be a lack of communication and clarity with management and staff. A recent survey determined that employers believed staff, in the main, left for increased compensation or better prospects. The reality - 54% of people surveyed quit because they did not feel valued by their managers, 52% did not feel valued by their organisations and 51% because they did not feel a sense of belonging.

So, an easy fix then? On the surface, yes. But in reality, it can mean a culture reset,  re-learning listening skills, reading body language signals, making oneself available, exercising empathy and most importantly understanding that every team member values being valued.
