ARE YOU EXPERIENCING BURN-OUT?

“Burn-out - a state of emotional, mental and often physical exhaustion brought on by prolonged or repeated stress”.  (Psychology today)

Symptoms can include physical and mental exhaustion, a fear or dread of going to work,  being short tempered, angry, cynical, irritable or a fear of being ineffective or inadequate.

After the last 2½  years It is little wonder then that more and more Executives are exhibiting symptoms. Having worked through Covid, leading or helping their companies to survive under extreme circumstances never before experienced, constantly being reactive, whilst also trying to plan for an uncertain future. Or, furloughed and not knowing if the bills could be paid or even if they had a future with their employer.   Add to that the world news which seems to get bleaker by the day, it is not surprising that we feel jaded, frustrated and exhibiting symptoms of burn-out.

It is not something to be ashamed of, it needs to be acknowledged by the individual and also the employer.  It does not mean you have to leave your employment. It can be a catalyst to re-evaluate your life. Plans can be  put in place to alleviate stress, take some time-out with either a vacation or a sabbatical (if possible). Make time to reflect and consider what can be done to repair your mind and body. Put in place some clear boundaries - work/life balance. Self-care usually in the form of some activity or exercise - meditation, yoga, running, cycling etc…. take time for yourself. See a professional if you feel you need it. Identify a mentor, employ a coach, put a support network in place.

If you recognise any of the symptoms mentioned or observe them in a colleague, please feel free to make contact or pass my details on - cate@dbxcareercoaching.com
